Why the factor is specific to cortisol

Cortisol, C₂₁H₃₀O₅, has a molar mass of 362.466 g/mol, summed from the standard atomic weights of its atoms. A result in µg/dL is a mass and one in nmol/L an amount of substance, so converting divides by the molar mass and multiplies by 10,000: 10 for the decilitres in a litre, times 1000 for the nanomoles in a micromole: 1 µg/dL = 10,000 ÷ 362.466 = 27.5888 nmol/L.

  1. nmol/L = µg/dL × 10,000 ÷ 362.466
  2. µg/dL = nmol/L × 362.466 ÷ 10,000

Which countries report which unit

American laboratories usually report cortisol in µg/dL, also written mcg/dL; British, Canadian and Australian ones report nmol/L.

Worked example

  1. 10 µg/dL in nmol/L
  2. = 10 × 10,000 ÷ 362.466
  3. = 275.888 nmol/L
