Why the factor is specific to testosterone
Testosterone, C₁₉H₂₈O₂, has a molar mass of 288.431 g/mol, summed from the standard atomic weights of its atoms. A result in ng/dL is a mass and one in nmol/L an amount of substance, so converting divides by the molar mass and multiplies by 10 for the decilitres in a litre: 1 ng/dL = 10 ÷ 288.431 = 0.0346703 nmol/L.
- nmol/L = ng/dL × 10 ÷ 288.431
- ng/dL = nmol/L × 288.431 ÷ 10
Which countries report which unit
American laboratories usually report testosterone in ng/dL; British, Canadian and Australian ones report nmol/L.
Worked example
- 300 ng/dL in nmol/L
- = 300 × 10 ÷ 288.431
- = 10.4011 nmol/L
