Why the factor is specific to creatinine
Creatinine, C₄H₇N₃O, has a molar mass of 113.12 g/mol, summed from the standard atomic weights of its atoms. A result in mg/dL is a mass and one in µmol/L an amount of substance, so converting divides by the molar mass and multiplies by 10,000: 10 for the decilitres in a litre, times 1000 for the micromoles in a millimole: 1 mg/dL = 10,000 ÷ 113.12 = 88.4017 µmol/L.
A factor fits one analyte only: 1 mg/dL of uric acid is 59.4842 µmol/L, as the uric acid conversion table shows.
The eGFR calculator converts with the same constant, usually quoted as 88.4.
- µmol/L = mg/dL × 10,000 ÷ 113.12
- mg/dL = µmol/L × 113.12 ÷ 10,000
Which countries report which unit
American and Indian laboratories usually report creatinine in mg/dL; British, Canadian and Australian ones report µmol/L.
Worked example
- 1.2 mg/dL in µmol/L
- = 1.2 × 10,000 ÷ 113.12
- = 106.082 µmol/L
