Why the factor is specific to progesterone

Progesterone, C₂₁H₃₀O₂, has a molar mass of 314.469 g/mol, summed from the standard atomic weights of its atoms. A result in ng/mL is a mass and one in nmol/L an amount of substance, so converting divides by the molar mass and multiplies by 1000 for the millilitres in a litre: 1 ng/mL = 1000 ÷ 314.469 = 3.17996 nmol/L.

A factor fits one analyte only: 1 ng/mL of 25-hydroxyvitamin D is 2.49596 nmol/L, as the 25-hydroxyvitamin D conversion table shows.

  1. nmol/L = ng/mL × 1000 ÷ 314.469
  2. ng/mL = nmol/L × 314.469 ÷ 1000

Which countries report which unit

American laboratories usually report progesterone in ng/mL; British, Canadian and Australian ones report nmol/L.

Worked example

  1. 10 ng/mL in nmol/L
  2. = 10 × 1000 ÷ 314.469
  3. = 31.7996 nmol/L
