Image licence
Images ScienceQuest generates are free to reuse, in a worksheet, a slide, a textbook or a website, commercial or not, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. The condition is credit, with a link to where the image came from and to the licence. They stay © ScienceQuest, and the meshes in the anatomy images stay © The Database Center for Life Science: the licence is permission to reuse them, not a transfer of the copyright.
What this covers
- The figures and renders shown on tool pages, including the 3D anatomy renders.
- The share images the site generates, the pictures a link preview shows.
- Images you download from a simulator or from an anatomy explorer.
You may copy, crop, recolour, translate the labels of, and build on any of them. If you change an image, say that you did.
What it does not cover
The written explanations, the FAQ answers, the worked examples and the practice questions are not under this licence. They remain copyright, as the terms of use set out. Neither are the tools themselves: a picture saved from a simulator is covered, but the simulator, its code and its interface are not. Neither are the ScienceQuest name and atom mark: CC BY 4.0 does not license trademarks, so reusing an image does not mean you may present your work as ours or as endorsed by us.
The icon on some share images is from Lucide, © Lucide Icons and Contributors, under the ISC licence, which allows reuse provided its notice is kept. It is not ours, so it is not offered under CC BY 4.0.
How to credit an image
Give the credit near the image, or wherever your medium puts credits, with a link to the page the image came from and to the licence. For most images:
Image: ScienceQuest, CC BY 4.0, from https://sciencequest.in/tools/<page>/
On a web page, link “ScienceQuest” to the page the image came from and “CC BY 4.0” to the licence. In print, write the page address out in full.
Keep any copyright notice an image carries, whether it is under a figure, in the picture, or in the file’s own metadata, as CC BY 4.0 asks.
Anatomy images
The 3D anatomy renders are drawn from the BodyParts3D meshes, © The Database Center for Life Science, which are published under the same licence. Reusing one of these images means crediting both: ScienceQuest for the render, and BodyParts3D for the anatomy it is drawn from, in the form its publisher asks for on its licence page. For example:
Image: ScienceQuest, CC BY 4.0. Meshes from BodyParts3D, © The Database Center for Life Science, licensed under CC Attribution 4.0 International.
The meshes were changed on their way into the explorers: converted to a compact format for the browser, with vertex positions quantised to 16 bits and surface normals recomputed. Each explorer states that change, and its worst-case effect on a coordinate, on its page.
An anatomy image shows the anatomy of the body that dataset was built from, not an average, and it is published as a teaching figure, not a diagnostic one.
Questions and errors
If an image is wrong, whether a label, a structure or a credit, please report it the same way as an error in a tool. For any other question about reusing an image, the contact page has the address.
