Why the factor is specific to uric acid
Uric acid, C₅H₄N₄O₃, has a molar mass of 168.112 g/mol, summed from the standard atomic weights of its atoms. A result in mg/dL is a mass and one in µmol/L an amount of substance, so converting divides by the molar mass and multiplies by 10,000: 10 for the decilitres in a litre, times 1000 for the micromoles in a millimole: 1 mg/dL = 10,000 ÷ 168.112 = 59.4842 µmol/L.
A factor fits one analyte only: 1 mg/dL of creatinine is 88.4017 µmol/L, as the creatinine conversion table shows.
- µmol/L = mg/dL × 10,000 ÷ 168.112
- mg/dL = µmol/L × 168.112 ÷ 10,000
- mmol/L = mg/dL × 10 ÷ 168.112
- mg/dL = mmol/L × 168.112 ÷ 10
Which countries report which unit
American and Indian laboratories usually report uric acid in mg/dL. British and Canadian ones report µmol/L, and Australian ones mostly mmol/L, so 0.36 mmol/L and 360 µmol/L are the same result from two reports.
Worked example
- 6 mg/dL in µmol/L
- = 6 × 10,000 ÷ 168.112
- = 356.905 µmol/L
