Why the factor is specific to estradiol

Estradiol, C₁₈H₂₄O₂, has a molar mass of 272.388 g/mol, summed from the standard atomic weights of its atoms. A result in pg/mL is a mass and one in pmol/L an amount of substance, so converting divides by the molar mass and multiplies by 1000 for the millilitres in a litre: 1 pg/mL = 1000 ÷ 272.388 = 3.67123 pmol/L.

  1. pmol/L = pg/mL × 1000 ÷ 272.388
  2. pg/mL = pmol/L × 272.388 ÷ 1000

Which countries report which unit

American laboratories usually report estradiol in pg/mL; British, Canadian and Australian ones report pmol/L, and British and Australian reports often spell it oestradiol.

Worked example

  1. 100 pg/mL in pmol/L
  2. = 100 × 1000 ÷ 272.388
  3. = 367.123 pmol/L
